Hierarchies

Hierarchies are contained within the dimensions, and in turn each hierarchy contains a list of elements. Hierarchies correspond to the columns imported from the datasource, while elements correspond to the objects within a table's columns in the datasource.

Hierarchies can be added to the query, or a selection of elements within a hierarchy can be added.

Hierarchy Types

There are 3 types of hierarchies, which enable different kinds of functionality:

  • Attribute Hierarchies: these are "flat" hierarchies containing a list of elements. These hierarchies can be added to the query, but do not enable drill or expand and collapse functionality.
  • Regular Hierarchies: consist of multiple flat hierarchies that are arranged into levels according to the desired drill path. These hierarchies enable drill and expand and collapse functions. Hierarchies constructed in MS OLAP, Tabular, and SAP models are represented as "regular hierarchies" in Pyramid. When working with SQL models, regular hierarchies can be constructed from the Model component.
  • Drill Path Hierarchies: like regular hierarchies, they consist of multiple flat hierarchies organized into levels. They are built in Model. Also like regular hierarchies they support drill and expand and collapse, but they functions behave differently in drill path hierarchies.

Elements

Elements tree: exposes all of the member elements contained in that hierarchy; users can add specified member elements to the query in a variety of ways.

List Builder: enables users to import or copy and paste a list of items representing the member elements they want to add to the query.

Alternative Captions for MS OLAP and SAP BW

This feature allows report-builders to use cube-defined properties as alternative captions for elements in the query.

Hierarchy Properties

Users can edit hierarchy properties, allowing you to create a metadata overlay that will display a different caption (name) and/ or category type. for the given hierarchies. These edits are visible only to the current users; they will not be visible to other users.

Image Hierarchies

Hierarchies consisting of image URLs can be added to the query, and the corresponding images displayed when the given visualization type is a grid or Cartesian chart. Click here to learn more.
